I'm Mari Syrén. Originally from Pori, I now reside in the rural town of Eura. I graduated from the Institute of Design of Lahti Polytechnic in 1998 and, depending on occasion, assume the title of jewellery maker, jewellery and artefact designer, jewellery artist or cultural entrepreneur.
I mainly engage in jewellery design and manufacturing under the commercial name Doing Design, which I established late in 1999. My workshop is upstairs from my apartment, so I can't complain about the fatigue of commuting. And whenever inspiration strikes, tools and materials are always handy.
I make jewellery to order and limited series for selling. Part of my work involves more artistic projects, such as making jewellery for exhibitions or pieces for participating in different types of competitions.
My design includes visible elements from, at the very least, mythology, kitsch and fantasy. Humour is also a recurring theme in my works. I enjoy crafting by hand and the experience of moulding hard material, such as metal, into pieces reflecting different moods and forms.
My principal material is silver. In addition to various metals, I frequently use many other materials, such as plastic, glass, stones, paper, and even silicone.
In addition to crafting my jewellery, I also
teach courses in jewellery making in community colleges and schools. I also
act as a local guide in the prehistoric sites of Eura.
